Scoliosis is a condition where the curve of your spine is greater than 10 degrees. This curvature can develop from postural changes, trauma, neurological disease, tumors, or for unknown reasons. This condition can lead to vertebrae twisting, uneven leg length and often appears between the ages of 10 and 15.
Symptoms of scoliosis include:
- Shoulders that aren’t at the same level
- Uneven waist
- One hip higher than the other
- One shoulder blade that sticks out more than the other
- Head appears off center
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
If your child is still growing, their doctor may recommend that they wear a brace to prevent further curvature of their spine, however the only way to restore the spine to its proper position is through spinal fusion surgery.
Although chiropractic care cannot reverse the curvature caused by scoliosis, it can bring patients relief from the pain that scoliosis causes.
